Case study: Bradford to Birmingham, how a long-distance move is planned

Moving from Bradford to Birmingham means well over a hundred miles of motorway. Here is how a move like this is usually planned so it fits into one working day.

Removal lorry on a motorway heading south

Bradford to Birmingham is one of the longer moves we plan regularly. It is well over a hundred miles door to door, mostly on motorway, and it sits right at the edge of what fits comfortably into one working day. The difference between a smooth move and a long, tiring one usually comes down to planning: when you load, when you leave, and what is waiting at the other end. This post explains how a move like this usually runs.

The route south

From most of Bradford the van joins the M606, then the M62 at junction 26 and heads east to the M1. From there it is a long run south. For Birmingham, most drivers either stay on the M1 to junction 23A and take the A42 and M42 towards the city, or come off earlier for the M6 depending on which side of Birmingham you are moving to. Some moves to the west side of the city go the other way, via the M62 west and the M6 south.

Without heavy traffic, the drive is usually around two and a half to three hours for a removal lorry. That can stretch a lot on a Friday afternoon or around roadworks, so we check the route the day before.

Timing the day

A move like this usually starts early. The crew arrives at the Bradford address within the agreed 3-hour slot, loads the van, and aims to be on the road before lunch. That leaves time to drive down, take a break, and unload in daylight.

A few things help the timings work:

  • Completion time. If you are buying, keys at the new home are often released around midday or later. We try to time the drive so the van is not waiting outside for hours.
  • Day of the week. Fridays are popular for completions and busy on the motorways. A midweek move is often calmer.
  • Overnight options. For larger homes, loading the day before and delivering the next morning can take the pressure off. Ask about this when you get your quote.

Access at the Bradford end

Bradford homes range from stone terraces on steep streets to semis with driveways and newer estates on the edge of the city. We ask about parking, stairs, narrow doors and anything that needs dismantling. Terraced streets with cars on both sides may need a parking suspension from the council, so it is worth checking that early.

Access at the Birmingham end

Birmingham has its own mix of Victorian terraces, inter-war semis and city centre flats. If you are moving into an apartment block, check whether there is a lift, whether it can be booked, and where vans are allowed to stop. Some buildings have loading bays with set hours.

Birmingham also has a Clean Air Zone covering the city centre inside the A4540 Middleway ring road. Some vehicles have to pay a daily charge to drive inside it. If your new home is in or near the zone, tell us when you ask for a quote so we can plan the right vehicle. You can check zone details on gov.uk.

Packing for a long move

Over a long motorway run, loose or badly packed boxes are more likely to shift. A move like this usually goes best when:

  1. Boxes are strong, full and taped well, with heavy items in small boxes.
  2. Fragile items are wrapped individually and boxes are marked clearly.
  3. Each box is labelled with the room it goes to, so unloading is quick.
  4. An “open first” box travels with you: kettle, mugs, phone chargers, toilet roll, bedding and any medicines.

Many people choose our packing service for long moves, because professionally packed loads travel better and unpacking is quicker.

Insurance and paperwork

For a long move it is worth thinking about cover for your belongings while they are on the road. Goods in transit cover is available to buy with your move. Our guide to choosing house removal insurance explains the options in plain terms.

What affects the cost

Long-distance moves are priced on the size of the load, the distance, the number of crew, access at both ends, packing, and whether an overnight stay or storage is needed. We do not publish set prices, but our moving cost calculator gives a rough range.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Bradford to Birmingham move be done in one day?

Usually, yes. Most homes can be loaded in the morning, driven down and unloaded the same day. Very large homes or difficult access can push it into two days, which we would flag at the quote stage.

Do I need to be at both ends?

Someone needs to be at the old home to hand over and check the empty rooms, and someone needs to be at the new home with keys when the van arrives. That can be the same person if you drive ahead of the van.
