Living on the ridge
Queensbury is one of the highest villages in England, sitting more than 1,000 feet above sea level on the ridge between Bradford and Halifax. It grew up around John Foster’s Black Dyke Mills, and the Black Dyke Band still carries the village name around the world. The main road from Bradford climbs through Great Horton to reach the centre, then carries on towards Halifax.
Housing in the old centre is mostly stone terraces built for mill families, often with steep steps and small front gardens. Around the village there are larger estates of semi-detached houses and plenty of newer homes, many bought by people who commute to Bradford, Halifax or Leeds. Gardens and garages are common on the newer estates, so a family move can include sheds, bikes and outdoor furniture.
Weather, hills and parking
The height is the main thing to plan for. Snow and ice can settle in Queensbury when the city is clear, and strong winds make carrying flat-pack, mattresses and mirrors harder work. We check the forecast before your move and will talk to you early if the timing needs to shift.
Many terraced streets slope sharply and have cars parked along both sides. We look at your road before the day and decide where the van can stop safely. On the newer estates, tight turning heads and shared drives are the usual issue, and we plan around those too.
