A hilltop village west of the city
Thornton sits on high ground on the western side of Bradford, at the far end of Thornton Road. It is best known as the birthplace of Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë, who were born in the house on Market Street before the family moved to Haworth. The old railway viaduct still crosses the valley below the village and is now part of a walking and cycling route.
The centre is made up of stone terraces and cottages along Market Street and the lanes around it, many with steps up to the front door. Around the edges of the village there are larger estates of semi-detached and detached houses, plus newer homes on former farmland. So a Thornton move can be anything from a two-bedroom cottage with a tight staircase to a four-bedroom house with a garage.
Access, gradients and weather
Market Street is narrow, and side streets drop away steeply from it. Parked cars on both sides are normal, so we look at your street before the day and plan exactly where the van will stand. Where a big van cannot get close, we use a smaller vehicle and trolleys rather than carry heavy items a long way by hand.
Thornton is exposed, and in winter ice and snow can settle here while the city stays clear. We watch the forecast in the days before your move and talk to you early if the timing needs to change. We are about 5 miles away on Alum Drive in BD9, and we come out either along Thornton Road or through Allerton.
