Batley and Bradford sit only a few miles apart, and plenty of people move between them for work, family or a bigger house for the money. A short distance does not mean a simple day, though. Both towns are built on hills, both have rows of stone terraces with tight parking, and the roads between them get busy at peak times. This post walks through how a move like this usually runs, from the first call to the last box.
The route between Batley and Bradford
The two towns are roughly 8 to 10 miles apart, depending on where you start and finish. There are two sensible ways to drive it.
- The motorway route. From Batley the van heads to the M62 at junction 27 near Birstall, runs west to junction 26 at Chain Bar, then takes the M606 into the south of Bradford. This suits homes in Low Moor, Wibsey, Odsal and the south side of the city.
- The A652 route. The A652 runs through Birstall towards Bradford. It is slower, with more junctions and traffic lights, but it can be the better choice for addresses on the east side of the city, around Leeds Road and Laisterdyke.
A move like this usually avoids the morning and evening rush on the M62, because the stretch around Chain Bar can back up quickly. We plan the loading time so the van is on the road mid-morning or early afternoon where we can.
Access at the Batley end
Batley grew up as a mill town, and much of its older housing is stone terraces on sloping streets. That brings a few things to check before the day:
- Parking. Many terraced streets have cars parked on both sides. If the van cannot stop near the door, we may need to ask neighbours for space or carry items a little further.
- Steps and narrow doors. Older terraces often have a step up from the pavement and narrow hallways. Sofas and wardrobes may need to come apart or go out through a back door.
- Back lanes. Some streets have a lane behind the houses. If it is wide enough, loading from the back can be quicker and safer than the front.
Access at the Bradford end
Bradford has the same mix of terraces, back-to-backs and newer estates, plus some very steep streets. When we quote, we ask about the new address too: is there a driveway, is it a flat with stairs, is the street on a bus route, and is there anywhere legal for a large van to stop? If you are moving to a street where parking is tight, it is worth asking the council about a parking suspension well ahead of the date. Packing and preparation
On a short move it is tempting to pack loosely and do several car runs. That usually takes longer than doing it properly once. A move like this usually goes best when:
- Boxes are packed and labelled by room a few days before.
- Beds and large furniture are either taken apart in advance or left for the crew to dismantle on the day.
- The fridge freezer is defrosted the night before.
- Anything fragile, valuable or personal (documents, medicines, keys) travels with you in the car.
If you would rather not pack yourself, our packing service can cover the whole house or just the kitchen and breakables.
How the day usually runs
We give a 3-hour arrival slot, so you know roughly when the crew will turn up. On arrival they walk through the house with you, agree what goes first, and protect floors and banisters where needed. Loading a typical two or three bedroom home takes a few hours. The drive from Batley is short, so unloading often starts soon after. At the new place, furniture goes into the rooms you choose and beds are rebuilt before the crew leaves.
If your completion is delayed and you cannot get the keys on the day, tell us as early as you can. Short-term storage can hold your things until the new home is ready.
What affects the cost
There are no fixed prices for a move like this, because every home is different. The main things that change the cost are the amount of furniture and boxes, how many crew members are needed, how easy access is at both ends, whether you want packing, and the day of the week. You can get a rough range from our moving cost calculator.
