Moving out house cleaning is the last big job before you hand back the keys, and for renters it can decide how much of your deposit comes back. This checklist works room by room, then covers deposits, meter readings, photos and getting rid of bulky items through Bradford Council. Print it or tick items off on your phone as you go.
Before you start cleaning
Clean once the furniture has gone. You will reach behind sofas, under beds and inside wardrobes, and you will not be cleaning around the removal team. If your movers come in the morning, plan your end of tenancy clean for the afternoon or the next day.
Gather your kit:
- multi-surface spray, bathroom cleaner, limescale remover and oven cleaner
- microfibre cloths, sponges and a scrubbing brush
- glass cleaner or a squeegee
- vacuum cleaner with a nozzle attachment
- mop and bucket
- rubber gloves and bin bags
- a step stool for high shelves, tops of cupboards and light fittings
Find your check-in inventory too. That is the standard your landlord will compare against.

Bradford homes: what to look out for
Stone terraces and back-to-backs
Many Bradford rentals are stone terraced houses and back-to-backs with cellars. Cellars collect damp, cobwebs and things left behind by previous tenants, so sweep them out and remove anything that is yours. Window frames on older terraces often get condensation and black mould, especially in bedrooms. Treat and wipe them before your check-out.
Small yards and back streets can also hide rubbish. If your bins are kept on a back street, make sure they are emptied and not overflowing when you leave.
Student lets in Great Horton
The streets around Great Horton Road and the University of Bradford are full of shared student houses. In a shared house, the deposit is often held jointly, so one messy room can affect everyone. Agree who cleans the kitchen, bathroom and shared spaces, and do a walk round together before the agent arrives. Our student removals team helps with moves at the end of term, when many leases end at once. If you live there, our Great Horton area page has more local detail.
Deposit protection: know your rights
In England, if you rent on an assured shorthold tenancy, your landlord must protect your deposit in a government-approved scheme. GOV.UK explains the rules and the three schemes on its tenancy deposit protection page.
Points worth knowing:
- Your landlord should tell you which scheme holds your deposit.
- Deductions must be fair. They can cover damage or cleaning beyond fair wear and tear, but not normal ageing of carpets and paintwork.
- If you disagree with a deduction, each scheme runs a free dispute resolution service.
- Ask for your deposit back in writing once you have moved out.
Meter readings and photos
On your last day, before you hand back the keys:
- Take meter readings. Photograph the gas, electricity and water meters (where there is one) showing the numbers clearly. Send them to your suppliers the same day.
- Photograph every room. Take wide shots and close ups of the oven, bathroom, carpets and walls. Your phone saves the date and time automatically.
- Record a short video walk round. It is quick and covers anything you missed in photos.
- Return all keys. Get a receipt or an email confirming the date you handed them back.
Getting rid of bulky waste in Bradford
Do not leave old mattresses or broken furniture behind. Landlords can deduct the cost of clearing them.
Bradford Council runs a bulky waste collection service for household items such as beds, mattresses, wardrobes and sofas. It works like this:
- book online, and register if you have not used it before
- collections are Monday to Friday, and you get a date when you book
- there is a limit on the number of items per collection
- you pay before the collection, not on the day
- items must be left somewhere safe and easy to reach, with soft furnishings covered
Book early. Slots can fill up, and you want the collection to happen before your keys go back. Landlords cannot use this service, as their waste counts as commercial.
You can also take items yourself to one of the council’s household waste recycling centres. The Bowling Back Lane centre also has a reuse shop for donated items in good condition.
Sellers: leave it ready for the buyer
If you are selling rather than renting, there is usually no formal cleaning standard, but your contract will expect the home to be empty and free of rubbish. A quick clean of the kitchen, bathroom and floors is a kind thing to leave behind, and it avoids a difficult phone call on completion day. Our guide to what happens on completion day explains how the timings work.
Let us handle the lifting
Cleaning is much easier in an empty home. Our flat removals team can load your furniture and boxes early in the day, leaving you time to clean before check-out. For bigger homes, see our house removals service.
