Moving house tips from Bradford removal crews

Twenty practical moving house tips for Bradford homes, from parking on narrow terraced streets to packing order, labelling and the box you open first.

Removal crew loading wrapped furniture into a van on a terraced street

Bradford is a great city to move around in, but it has its own quirks. Steep streets, stone steps, narrow stairs in old terraces and cobbled back streets all change how a move day goes. These moving house tips come from the kind of jobs our crews do every week, from back-to-backs in Manningham to semis on the hills of Queensbury and Idle. Use them to plan ahead, protect your things and finish the day with a bed made up.

Moving house tips for booking and planning

1. Book early, and book the date you actually need

Fridays, Saturdays and the last few days of the month fill up first, because that is when most completions land. If your date is flexible, a midweek move is often easier to book. If it is fixed, book as soon as you know it. Our quotations are valid for three months, so you can lock in a crew while your solicitor finishes the paperwork.

2. Get a proper quote, not a guess

A good quote needs the number of rooms, any loft, garage or shed, and the access at both ends. Mention steps, steep drives, narrow stairs and how far the van can park from the door. The more we know, the fewer surprises on the day.

3. Know your arrival slot

We give a 3-hour arrival time slot. Plan the morning so you are ready from the start of that window, with kettle and mugs still out for the crew.

4. Check the loft early

Loft items can only be moved safely if there is a fitted loft ladder and boarding. If yours has neither, bring the boxes down yourself in the days before, or ask about it when you get your quote.

5. Tell us about the garden

Sheds, garden furniture and outdoor items are quoted separately. List them up front so they are planned into the load rather than added on the day.

Bradford access tips

6. Sort parking before move day

Many Bradford terraces have parking on both sides and very little space for a large van. Ask neighbours to leave a gap outside your door on the day, or look into a parking suspension. Our guide to removal van parking in Bradford explains the options.

7. Plan for steep streets

Parts of Queensbury, Thornton, Idle, Wibsey and Shipley are steep. Vans are loaded with heavy items low and secured well, and crews need a safe, level-ish spot to work from. If your street is very steep, tell us so we can plan where to park and how to carry.

8. Clear the stone steps

Lots of Bradford houses have stone steps up to the front door, often worn smooth. Sweep them, clear moss or leaves, and in winter grit them the night before. Wet stone is slippery when you are carrying a wardrobe.

9. Measure narrow stairs and doorways

Older terraces often have tight, turning staircases. Measure the stairs, landing and doorways at the new house and compare them with your sofa, beds and wardrobes. Some items need legs removing or a different route in.

10. Back-to-backs need a plan for the front door

Back-to-back houses have one entrance, often straight into the living room, with a steep stair up from there. Furniture goes through one door only. Move small furniture out of the way and keep the route clear. We cover this in detail in our post on moving a Bradford terrace or back-to-back.

11. Cobbled back streets and ginnels

If the van will load from a cobbled back street, check it is clear of bins and parked cars. Cobbles are uneven for trolleys, so crews often carry by hand. Tell us if the only route in is a narrow ginnel or passage.

Packing tips

12. Pack in the right order

Start with rooms you use least: spare bedroom, loft, garage, then books, ornaments and out-of-season clothes. Pack the kitchen and bathroom last, leaving out a few plates, mugs and a pan.

13. Use strong boxes and do not overfill them

Heavy items like books go in small boxes. Light items like bedding go in large ones. A box should be easy for one person to lift. Fill gaps with paper or towels so nothing shifts.

14. Label every box on two sides

Write the room and a short list of contents on the side, not just the top. Stacked boxes hide their lids. Use a colour per room if you like, and put a matching sticker on each door at the new house.

15. Keep screws with the furniture

When you take apart beds, tables or shelves, put the screws and fittings in a sealed bag and tape it to the item. It saves an hour of searching on the first night.

16. Pack fragile items properly

Plates go on their edge, not flat. Glasses get wrapped one by one. TVs travel upright. Our guide on how to pack fragile items walks through each one. If time is short, our packing service can do it for you.

17. Defrost the freezer the day before

Fridges and freezers should be emptied, defrosted and dried at least 24 hours before the move. Put towels down to catch water.

Moving day tips

18. Pack a first night box

Kettle, mugs, tea, chargers, toilet roll, towels, bedding, medication, a torch, a few tools and snacks. Keep it in your car, not on the van, so it is the first thing through the door.

19. Keep valuables and paperwork with you

Passports, keys, jewellery, laptops and house documents should travel with you. Keep the paperwork for your move and your new home in one folder.

20. Do a final walk round

Before the van leaves, check every room, cupboard, the loft, the shed and behind doors. Read the meters and take photos. Then lock up and hand the keys over as agreed.

One more tip: let the crew do the heavy work

The safest moves are the ones where people do the job they are good at. You know where things should go in the new house. The crew knows how to get a wardrobe down a turning stair without marking the walls. If you want help with the whole thing, from packing to unloading, our house removals service covers it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best day to move house?

Midweek dates are often easier to book than Fridays, Saturdays and the end of the month, when most completions happen. If you can choose, ask your removal company which dates are quieter and book as early as you can.

How far in advance should I book a removal company?

As soon as you have a likely date. Four to six weeks ahead is a good target, and earlier for end-of-month or summer moves. A quotation from us is valid for three months, so you can book before your completion date is fixed.

What should I pack first when moving house?

Start with things you will not need before the move: spare rooms, lofts, books, out-of-season clothes and ornaments. Leave the kitchen basics, bedding and toiletries until the last day or two.

What should go in a first night box?

Kettle, mugs, tea or coffee, phone chargers, toilet roll, a towel each, bedding, medication, basic tools, a torch, snacks and your keys and paperwork. Keep it in the car with you, not on the van.
