People searching for man and van prices usually want one number. The honest answer is that no two jobs cost the same, because the price depends on how much you are moving, how far, and how easy it is to get in and out at each end. A two-seater sofa from a ground floor flat in Great Horton is a very different job from a full one-bedroom flat on the third floor in the city centre. This guide explains what is included, what moves the price, and how to get a quote that matches your move.

What a man and van booking usually includes
A man and van service is a van, a driver and, if you book them, one or more extra helpers. With our man and van service, the basic booking normally covers:
- the van and a driver who knows Bradford’s roads
- loading, driving and unloading your items
- blankets and straps so furniture is wrapped and held in place
- basic protection for doorways and floors where needed
What is not always included, and worth asking about:
- extra helpers beyond the driver
- taking beds and wardrobes apart and putting them back together
- packing boxes, tape and packing paper
- packing your things for you
- storage if your new place is not ready
If any of these matter to you, put them on the list when you ask for a price. That way they are in the quote from the start rather than added on the day.
What affects man and van prices
Crew size
One person can manage boxes and light furniture. Heavy or bulky items such as a fridge freezer, an American-style fridge, a solid wood wardrobe or a large sofa need two people, sometimes three. A bigger crew adds to the cost, but it also works faster, so a bigger crew can finish sooner.
Van size
A bigger van carries more in one trip. If a small van has to drive back and forth three times, you may pay more than for one larger van doing it in one go. For a guide to what fits in each size, see what fits in a man and van.
Hours on the job
Time is the biggest factor on most bookings. It is made up of loading, driving and unloading. Being packed and ready when the crew arrives is the simplest way to keep the hours down.
Distance
A move within Bradford, say from Girlington to Eccleshill, is mostly loading time. A move to Leeds, Manchester or further adds driving time and fuel. Longer trips may be priced differently from local ones, so say clearly where you are going.
Stairs, lifts and long carries
Bradford has plenty of stone terraces with steep, narrow stairs, back-to-backs with no rear access, and converted mill flats with long corridors. Every flight of stairs and every extra metre between the door and the van adds time. A working lift helps, but check whether it is big enough for your largest item. Our guide to moving a Bradford terrace or back-to-back covers this in more detail.
Parking
If the van can park right outside, loading is quick. On narrow terraced streets where cars line both sides, the van may have to park further away, and the crew walks every item to it. Pay and display bays, permit zones and yellow lines can add cost or delay. See parking a removal van in Bradford for how to plan it.
Packing
If you pack yourself, you save time on the day. If you want the crew to pack, or you need boxes and materials supplied, that adds to the quote. Our packing service can do some or all of it.
Dismantling and reassembly
Beds, wardrobes, desks and some sofas need taking apart to get through doors and up stairs. That takes time and tools, so mention it when you ask for a price.
Waiting time
On completion day, keys are sometimes released later than planned. If the crew is loaded and waiting outside the new house, that time usually counts. Ask how waiting time is handled before you book.
Hourly and fixed quotes compared
Man and van prices are normally given in one of two ways.
Hourly quotes charge for the time the van and crew are booked. They suit small or uncertain jobs: a few items, a single piece of furniture, or a move where you are not sure how long it will take. Ask when the clock starts and stops, whether travel to your address counts, and whether there is a minimum booking time.
Fixed quotes give one price for the whole job, based on your item list and the access at both ends. They suit fuller moves where you know exactly what is going. The price holds as long as the job matches what was described. If extra items appear on the day or access turns out to be harder, the price can change.
Neither is better in every case. The key is knowing which one you have and what would change it. Our quotations are valid for 3 months, so you can book ahead and plan around a known figure.
How to get an accurate quote
The more detail you give, the closer the quote is to the final cost. Before you ask, have this ready:
- A full item list. Room by room, including boxes, garden furniture and anything in the loft or cellar. Lofts can only be cleared if there is a fitted loft ladder and boarding. Sheds and outdoor furniture are quoted separately.
- Both addresses with floor levels. Say if there are stairs, a lift, or steps up from the pavement.
- Parking at each end. Can a van stop outside? Is it a permit zone? Is the street narrow or steep?
- Large or awkward items. A corner sofa, a piano, a range cooker or a wardrobe that does not come apart.
- Your dates. Including how fixed they are. A flexible date can be easier to fit in.
- Extras. Packing, dismantling, storage or a second drop-off address.
Photos or a short video of each room help a lot. When you get the quote, read what it covers, check the arrival slot (we give a 3-hour arrival time slot) and ask about anything that is not clear.
Ways to keep man and van prices down
- Clear out before you move. Every item you sell, donate or recycle is one less to carry.
- Pack everything into boxes before the crew arrives, and label them by room.
- Take beds apart the night before if you are able to.
- Sort parking in advance so the van can stop close to your door.
- Pick a weekday if your dates allow.
- Be ready on time, with keys and access sorted at both ends.
