A house move feels big because lots of small jobs land at once. Planning it is mostly about doing those jobs in the right order. This guide sets out the order that works for most moves in Bradford, from the first phone call to the last box, with the local details that tend to catch people out.
Fix the date first
Everything else hangs off the moving date. If you are buying or selling, your solicitor will confirm completion once contracts are exchanged. Until then, treat any date as a target, not a promise. If you are renting, check the end date on your tenancy and the start date on the new one, and see if there is any overlap.
A few tips on picking a day:
- Midweek days are often easier to book than Fridays.
- Month ends are busy because many tenancies and completions fall then.
- In winter, daylight is short. An early start means more of the loading happens in the light, which matters on steep Bradford streets.
Book your removal crew early
Once you have a likely date, ask for a quote. A good quote is based on what you are actually moving, so walk round the house and note the big items, the number of rooms and anything unusual such as a piano, a large fridge freezer or a shed. Outdoor furniture and sheds are quoted separately, so mention them up front.
With us, a quotation stays valid for 3 months, and you get a 3-hour arrival slot for the day. If you want a rough idea of what affects the cost before you call, try the moving cost calculator. For a full move with furniture taken apart, wrapped and rebuilt, see our house removals page.
Think about access at both ends
Access is where Bradford moves gain or lose time. Many homes here are stone terraces or back-to-backs with steep front steps, narrow staircases and tight turns on the landing. Some sit on cobbled back streets where a big van cannot get close.
Before moving day, check:
- Where the van can park. On narrow terraced streets in places like Great Horton or around Heaton, parking outside your door is not guaranteed. Speak to neighbours a few days before.
- Stairs and doorways. Measure large sofas, wardrobes and bed frames against the narrowest point. Some will need taking apart.
- The loft. We only clear lofts that have a fitted ladder and boarding, for safety. If yours does not, bring things down yourself before the day.
- Hills and steps. A long carry up a slope takes longer than a flat drive, so mention it when you ask for a quote.
If parking will be tight, look at Bradford Council’s guidance on parking and road space on bradford.gov.uk in good time.
Sort and declutter before you pack
Every item you get rid of is one less thing to wrap, carry and unpack. Go room by room and split things into keep, sell, give away and tip. Charity shops, local selling groups and the council’s household waste sites can take a lot. Do this before you buy boxes, so you only buy what you need.
Pack in a sensible order
Start early and work from the least used rooms to the most used.
- Four weeks out: loft, garage, spare room, books, pictures and ornaments.
- Two weeks out: most of the living room, spare bedding and clothes you will not need.
- Last few days: kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms, keeping out what you use daily.
Label each box with the room it goes to and a short note of what is inside. Keep heavy items in small boxes so they are easy to lift. If you would rather not pack at all, our packing service can do some rooms or the whole house.

Tell people you are moving
Make a list of who needs your new address: Bradford Council for council tax, your energy and water suppliers, your bank, your GP, the DVLA and your employer. Royal Mail redirection is worth setting up before you go, so nothing gets missed in the first weeks.
The final week
- Confirm the time slot and both addresses with your removal firm.
- Defrost the freezer the day before.
- Pack an essentials box: kettle, mugs, phone chargers, toilet roll, basic tools, medicines and bedding for the first night.
- Take meter readings and photos of each room when you leave.
- Keep keys, documents and valuables with you, not in the van.
On the day
Be at the house when the crew arrives so you can walk them round. Point out anything fragile and anything that is staying. At the new home, stand at the door and tell the crew which room each box and piece of furniture goes to. Beds go up first, so you can sleep well that night.
